Institute for Forensic Medicine

The mission of the Institute of Forensic Medicine, as the only institution in the country that offers such medical services, is to provide medical-legal services based on the best European and international practices for all citizens of Kosovo.

The Institute is responsible for providing forensic services, such as:
• Forensic autopsy in cases of forensic deaths (including the forensic examination at the scene where the death occurred);
• Clinical and forensic examination of cases that have been subjected to possible physical or sexual violence;
• Laboratory examination of tissue samples, as well as other services based on the order of the Court or the State Prosecutor, such as burial, exhumation, etc.;
• Examination of the remains of missing persons related to the war in Kosovo (including the search, finding and exhumation, as well as determining the fate, identification and delivery of these remains to their families);
• Professional, educational and scientific and research activities, etc.

 

Some of the objectives of the Institute of Forensic Medicine are;
– Carrying out activities based on the legal mandate;
– Increasing transparency;
– Increasing efficiency in response to requests for forensic services;
– Removal of possible risks for health and safety at work;
– Providing psychosocial support to family members of missing persons.

 

Based on the Regulation for the Internal Organization and Systematization of the Institute of Forensic Medicine, the organizational structure is:
• Office of the General Director
• Departments and
• Divisions, which include professional and support staff.
