Minister Gërvalla: Violence against women, domestic violence and violence in society, is one of the most painful wounds in our time

Prishtina, 09/03/2026

As part of her activities to mark the International Women’s Day, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Donika Gërvalla, participated in a discussion evening that was organized in the city of Zurich, Switzerland, focusing on the fight against violence against women and their empowerment in society.

In this occasion, Minister Gërvalla said that violence against, domestic women and violence in society, remains one of the most painful wounds in our time, adding any act of violence against women is unacceptable and must be condemned without compromise.

“A man who dares to raise his hand against a woman is an evil person, and that is period. Many women grapple with physical, psychological, economic or emotional violence. The violence often happens silently, behind closed doors, away from the eyes of society. Many of the women are obliged to remain silent because of fear, shame, economic dependence or lack of support. Nevertheless, a society that remains silent in the face of violence against women is an unjust and undignified society. It becomes complicit,” she stressed.

Minister Gërvalla said that a decent society does not tolerate violence against women, but is committed to protecting and empowering them in every aspect of life.

During her stay in Zurich, Minister Gërvalla joined many strong women and ladies at an evening that aimed not only to celebrate the achievements of women, but also to reflect on the challenges they keep facing.

In this regard, she thanked Ms. Valdete Hoti, president of the Association Parandalo, for setting up this activity in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Kosovo in Bern, and for providing an important space for discussion on an issue requiring continuous attention and commitment.

She also expressed special gratitude to the panelists including Dr. Feride Rushiti, Dr. Xhida Lumi and Dr. Luljeta Shaqiri Emini for their professional contribution and the important perspectives they brought to the discussion on the protection of women’s rights and the fight against gender-based violence.

Additionally, Minister Gërvalla spoke of the role of Albanian women throughout history, describing them as proud, noble and resilient.

“The weight carried by Albanian women on her shoulders throughout history is inalienable. No force can stop her determination to stand up for her dignity, freedom and rights”, she emphasized.

In conclusion, she reiterated the institutional commitment to combat and prevent all forms of violence against women, as well as to support, protect and empower every woman and girl who seeks justice, security and respect.

“Empowering women is empowering society itself”, she concluded.
