Prishtina, 12/03/2026

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Donika Gërvalla accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Justice Genc Nimoni, and the Director of the Kosovo Correctional Service, Ismail Dibrani, visited the Women Correctional Center in Lipjan.

During this visit, Minister Gërvalla held a meeting with the directors of correctional institutions and the directors of departments of the General Directorate of the Kosovo Correctional Service, with whom they discussed the work, challenges and priorities in the correctional system.

Special emphasis was placed on the security situation in correctional institutions, the prevention of smuggling, the strengthening of control measures and the implementation of resocialization programs for prisoners.

“The correctional system must be strong, disciplined and fair. This requires determined leadership, uncompromising implementation of the law and full institutional commitment to guarantee the security, order and integrity of every correctional institution in the country. These standards are not just institutional expectations, but responsibilities that will be followed with seriousness and continuous close attention”, said Minister Gërvalla.

As part of the visit’s agenda, Minister Gërvalla also visited the premises of the Women Correctional Center. She discussed with imprisoned women and got acquainted with the work facilities, including the IT cabinet, the tailoring room and the library. She also saw up close some of the exhibited silver filigree works and paper filigree works made by the imprisoned women as part of rehabilitation activities.

“The more we invest in resocialization, the better we fulfill our obligation as a state, because the punishment is the deprivation of freedom, while the success of the correctional system is also measured by a person’s ability to build a normal life after the end of the sentence. The emptier the prisons, the stronger the state and the stronger our society”, said Minister Gërvalla.

The visit concluded with the handover of the final cup in tennis, a match that took place between the prisoners.
