Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Donika Gërvalla, welcomed today’s decision of the Basic Court in Pristina, whereby Dejan Racić was sentenced to 15 years in prison for war crimes, specifically for acts of sexual violence during the war in Kosovo.
“This is the fourth case in which the domestic justice system has punished perpetrators of these crimes, showing that silence and impunity are slowly coming to an end. The road remains long, but in the end, justice and truth always prevail,” said Minister Gërvalla.
She expressed support for the survivors of sexual violence during the war and thanked the KRCT for its unwavering support for the survivors throughout the entire judicial process.
“In thanking this organization, we also thank all the organizations and activists who, every day, with extraordinary and selfless commitment, work for the survivors of sexual violence during the last war in Kosovo,” stated Minister Gërvalla.
Minister Gërvalla also praised the survivors’ stance, emphasizing the importance of continued institutional and social support.
“The dignified stance of our heroines, the survivors, who are once again demonstrating unparalleled integrity and courage, confronting, now in the courtroom, those who committed indescribable crimes against them, is to be admired,” stated Minister Gërvalla, adding that these women and men deserve even stronger and broader respect and support from our institutions and society.
“Justice for survivors of sexual violence during the war in Kosovo,” concluded Minister Gërvalla.
