Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Donika Gërvalla, today participated in the closing session of a three-day workshop dedicated to discussing and finalizing a package of draft laws deriving from the Joint Declaration of Commitment, one of the most important reform processes in the country’s justice system.
Over the three days of discussions, representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Kosovo Judicial Council, the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council, the Police, the Academy of Justice, the Agency for Prevention of Corruption, civil society, and international partners reviewed and advanced the draft law package aimed at strengthening integrity, accountability, and professionalism in the justice system.
Addressing the participants, Minister Gërvalla stated that the six draft laws arising from this joint commitment among justice institutions will soon be submitted for approval to the Government and the Assembly of Kosovo.
Minister Gërvalla said that the finalization of this stage of reform will have a fundamental impact on the unwavering strengthening of the justice system in the Republic of Kosovo, which focuses on access to justice for citizens and the integrity and professionalism of justice institutions, as well as marking an important step towards ending the negative practices of impunity.
“Consequently, through these acts, for the first time the issue of dismissal of judges and prosecutors for lack of work and professionalism is addressed, disciplinary violations are categorized and specified, and, also, for the first time, the assessment of their performance is regulated by law”, said Minister Gërvalla.
Further, she said that this initiative, launched in 2023, has resulted in the preparation of six draft laws related to the integrity checks for judges and prosecutors, their performance evaluation, the disciplinary system and asset control , as well as the Academy of Justice and civil servants of the administration of courts and prosecution offices.
Finally, Minister Gërvalla expressed her commitment to the finalization and implementation of this reform, to ensure a system with new professional standards, at the service of every citizen.
