Government Approves the Initiative for the Accession of Kosovo to the Inter-American Convention on Serving Criminal Sentences Abroad

Prishtina, 30/09/2026
At its third meeting, the Government of the Republic of Kosovo approved in principle the initiative for the accession of the Republic of Kosovo to the Inter-American Convention on Serving Criminal Sentences Abroad, with the aim of strengthening the rule of law, international cooperation in criminal matters, and the international standing of the Republic of Kosovo.
“The purpose of this Convention is to further strengthen international legal cooperation regarding the transfer of convicted persons, enabling them to serve their sentences in their country of origin in accordance with international standards and with respect for fundamental human rights,” said Minister Gërvalla while presenting the initiative.
In addition, she stated this initiative would lead to the deepening of the Republic of Kosovo’s legal cooperation with Latin American countries, in particular, and providing for individuals to serve prison terms while closer to their families and communities, thereby supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of convicted persons.
Accession to the Convention, as pointed out by Minister Gërvalla, would contribute to the more efficient management of the correctional system and to the reduction of associated costs.
