Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister of Justice, Donika Gërvalla, has strongly condemned the serious act of murder of an 80-year-old woman who was allegedly killed by her husband.

Minister Gërvalla said that violence against women remains an alarm for the entire society and that there must be a clear institutional and social response to it.

“Violence against women is an alarm for the entire society. In the face of it, there is no room for silence. In the face of this alarm, our response must be clear and unequivocal: ZERO TOLERANCE. Today, another woman has lost her life. A mother in her 80s, a sister, a member of a family, is no longer among us today. She is suspected of being killed by her husband,” said Minister Gërvalla, adding that no circumstance, no reason and no relationship can justify violence against a woman, much less taking her life.

Minister Gërvalla called for reporting every case of violence and for immediate response to any sign that could endanger the lives and safety of victims.

“We cannot remain silent in the face of violence. If we know of a case, we hear a call for help, if we notice signs that worry us, we must act. A phone call can save a life”, declared Minister Gërvalla.

She emphasized the importance of using institutional mechanisms for reporting, responding and protecting victims.

“No case of violence is a ‘family matter’. Every threat, mistreatment and every sign of violence must be reported. Today we have powerful mechanisms for reporting, responding and protecting victims. Let’s use them. Let’s not leave anyone alone in the face of violence”, said Minister Gërvalla.

In conclusion, Minister Gërvalla expressed her most sincere condolences to the victim’s family and relatives.

“Our deepest condolences to the family and relatives. Your loss is our loss. Your pain is our pain. In these difficult moments, we are with you with all our hearts,” said Minister Gërvalla.
