Minister Gërvalla gathers responsible institutions in the aftermath of the murder of a pregnant woman in Malisheva

Following the tragic case of the murder of a 25-year-old pregnant woman in the village of Kërvasari, in Malisheva, the Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, as well as the National Coordinator against Domestic Violence, Violence against Women and Gender-Based Violence Donika Gërvalla held a meeting with representatives of the Kosovo Police, the Prosecution Office, the Court and the Center for Social Work.

The purpose of the meeting was to review the functioning of institutional mechanisms and to take the necessary measures to prevent cases of violence.

“Such cases make us stop and consider with full responsibility the functioning of institutional mechanisms and do everything possible to prevent their recurrence. Each life that is lost compels us to do more, to do, in advance, everything in our power to prevent another case”, said Minister Gërvalla.

She emphasized the importance of cooperation and responsibility of all institutions in preventing violence.

“Prevention requires vigilance, responsibility and full cooperation between institutions. Everyone must be serios in their duty, act in a timely manner making sure no link in the system fails”, said Minister Gërvalla.

Further, she said based on the information provided by the responsible institutions, the victim’s husband is the suspect and the victim does not appear to have been previously identified in any situation that would signal such a risk.

“Now it is essential that all necessary actions be taken and the case be clarified”, emphasized Gërvalla.

Minister Gërvalla asked that competent authorities investigate all circumstances of the case and   responsibility be determined in accordance with the law.

“Responsible authorities must determine accountability and no circumstance of the case should remain uninvestigated”, she said.

Restating the institutional position on such cases, the Minister Gërvalla said that there will be no compromise on violence.

“Violence has no justification. There will be zero tolerance and no compromise on it. Protecting the life and safety of every woman and every citizen is an unquestionable institutional responsibility. We will continue to work with all institutions to prevent violence, protect victims and strengthen every mechanism that can save a life”, declared Minister Gërvalla.
