Minister Gërvalla: The courage of sexual violence survivors is a part of our freedom history

Prishtina, 18/06/2026

The Acting Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Donika Gërvalla participated today in the conference titled “Together for Recognition and Support”, organized by the Government Commission for the Recognition and Verification of the Status of Persons Raped during the War and the Agency for Gender Equality, with the support of UN Women, in celebration of June 19 – the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War.

In her speech, Minister Gërvalla said that this day is a moment to honor all those who experienced sexual violence during the war in Kosovo and to reaffirm our commitment to justice.

Furthermore, she said that sexual violence during the war was a planned crime that was used as a tool of war.

“Sexual violence did not occur accidentally nor was it an accidental outcome of the war.  Rather it was used as a weapon of war. It was used for humiliation, intimidation and to inflict deep wounds, which, to be honest, are still being felt,” said Minister Gërvalla.

Minister Gërvalla praised their courage of wartime survivors of sexual violence in overcoming the silence and seeking justice.

“For many years, these crimes remained under the veil of silence. Therefore, today we honor not only the suffering of the survivors, but above all their courage. Their courage to speak up. The courage to testify. The courage to seek justice,” declared Minister Gërvalla.

Minister Gërvalla expressed gratitude to civil society organizations, professionals, activists and all those who have contributed over the years to supporting survivors, highlighting the role of President Atifete Jahjaga to make sure this matter cut free from the reign of silence.

In her address, Minister Gërvalla said the Republic of Kosovo has taken concrete steps to document, investigate and prosecute war crimes.

“The Republic of Kosovo has taken concrete steps to document, investigate and prosecute war crimes. We have strengthened institutional capacities, created mechanisms for the recognition and support of survivors and enabled trials in absentia for war crimes. The lack of cooperation from Serbia should not become a permanent obstacle to our pursuit of justice”, Minister Gërvalla affirmed.

She reiterated that justice for survivors remains a daily institutions’ obligation. Perpetrators must face justice, while Serbia must bear its due responsibility.

In conclusion, Minister Gërvalla conveyed a strong message of solidarity to the survivors.

“Not only are you not alone. Not only will we not forget, not only will we not remain silent. But we will never stop seeking justice. True justice, institutional justice and accountability for all war crimes. Your courage is part of history, of our freedom and of the strength of the Republic of Kosovo”, said Minister Gërvalla
