On the occasion of the 36th anniversary of the July 2nd Constitutional Declaration, the Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Donika Gërvalla commemorated one of the most significant acts in Kosovo’s modern history that, as she said, laid the first cornerstone in the creation of the Republic of Kosovo.
” July 2, 1990, delegates of the Kosovo Assembly who were not allowed to enter the assembly building, expressed, under threat of special police units, the will of the people of Kosovo by adopting a declaration that pronounced Kosovo an equal unit under Yugoslav federation/confederation, said Minster Gërvalla, and added the brave delegates laid the first cornerstep of our modern nationhood and oriented it irreversible to formation of the republic.
In addition, she said the July 2nd Declaration became the political and legal foundation upon which the Republic’s institutions were built, civil resistance was organized, national mobilization was strengthened, and the aspirations of Kosovo’s citizens for freedom, independence, and democracy were kept alive.
“Today, the Republic of Kosovo stands as the most powerful testament to the fact that the vision of July 2nd was right, daring, and historically unstoppable,” said Minister Gërvalla.
She said the best way to expressing our gratitude to delegates of July 2nd is the continuous strengthening of the state, the protection of democracy, and the advancement of the Republic—for which they assumed a historic responsibility at one of the most decisive moments in our national history.
