At the end of her visit to the Municipality of Gjilan, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice also visited the Detention Center, where she familiarized herself closely with the conditions, operations, and challenges faced by this institution.
On this occasion, Minister Gërvalla stated that the correctional system remains one of the most direct tests of the state’s seriousness to justice and leaves no room for double standards.
“In this regard, the international commitments we have undertaken, including the International Agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark, increase our responsibility to build a functional and reliable correctional system in full compliance with the standards we ourselves aim to represent,” said Minister Gërvalla.
During the visit, Minister Gërvalla discussed with management and correctional staff their concrete responsibilities in ensuring respect for the rights of persons deprived of their liberty, as well as the need for standards to be implemented in practice and “not just remain on paper, because the way persons deprived of their liberty are treated reflects the true strength of the rule of law.”
Finally, Minister Gërvalla emphasized that institutional engagement in this field will be daily and continuous. According to her, increasing institutional accountability and responsibility is an obligation, not a choice, and will be pursued with the greatest determination.
