To remember Ymer Elshani, one of most distinguished Albanian intellectuals and writers, who was killed in Poklek, Drenas, along with most of his family by Serbian forces during the Kosovo War, the Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Donika Gërvalla visited today his House Museum where she paid her tribute to his life, work, and sacrifice.
“This place reminds us that our freedom-loving people history is not marked by dates and events only but rather by lives and commitment of those who fell for the national conscience”, said Minister Gërvalla.
The genocidal regime feared not only weapons, but also books, free thought, and individuals like Ymer Elshani, who helped shape the conscience of a nation.
“Serbia did not only target the lives of Albanians, but also our intellectuals, writers and creators. Therefore, both his murder and his families’ during the war constituted Serbia’s genocidal policy, aiming the physical destruction of Albanians, and our collective thinking, culture and memory. He was killed together with his wife, four sons, mother and many other civilians in Poklek, Drenas, by Serbian forces”, declared Minister Gërvalla.
Minister Gërvalla said he was one of the most important writers of children literature and a creator whose work contributed in education of generations instilling in them the love for the Albanian language, culture and identity.
Minister Gërvalla expressed special gratitude to Teuta Elshani, the writer’s daughter and the only survivor of the family, for preserving the family heritage that contributed to the house of writer Ymer Elshani being transformed into a museum and a permanent testimony of the high price that the people of Kosovo paid for freedom.
“The memory of Ymer Elshani is the memory of the high price of our freedom and a permanent commitment to defend the Republic of Kosovo even more strongly and with dignity, with historical truth, built on the sacrifice and on the blood of all those who fell for its freedom,” said Minister Gërvalla.
