The roundtable discussion titled “The right of girls and women to inheritance and property” organized by the Ministry of Justice as part of the Global Campaign “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” was held today.

In his opening speech, the Acting Minister of Justice, Blerim Sallahu, said the equality in property was the basis of independence, economic security and the decisions-making power. He reiterated that the property in the hands of women did not weaken the family, but rather strengthens it, keeping it firm, and uniting it over justice.

Speaking about the legal aspect, Minister Sallahu mentioned that our state has clearly defined through the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo the right to equality in property pointing to the drafting of the Civil Code that precisely regulates the said right.

“Our commitment is: equality in property will not remain in paper. It will be a public policy, based on law, supported by institutions, and protected by political will”, said Minister Sallahu, adding the Ministry of Justice will make decisions to impact the lives of women and girls in our country.

Apart from participating stakeholders, the panel was also addressed by the Executive Director of the Agency for Gender Equality, Edi Gusia, the Ombudsman, Naim Qelaj, the Director of the Agency for Free Legal Aid, Faton Jashari and the Executive Director of “Kosova – Women 4 Women”, Ilirjana Jaka Gashi.

The discussion table “The right of girls and women to inheritance and property”, was moderated by Vlora Limani-Hajnuni, political Advisor.
